FHS - Program Installation Procedures
The Family History System program and support files are provided here as a single compressed (ZIP) file. You should decompress (unZIP) the contents of this file into a directory of your hard drive. In fact I would recommend that you name the directory "\FAMILY" because that is the name of the directory into which FHS software is installed from diskettes that are sent to registered users. In previous versions of FHS, all family data files and work files were also placed in the same directory as the programs. This update allows you to create "File Setups" that identify directories (possibly all different) in which four groups of files are placed. Those groups are:The directory structure assumed by the Family Definition File provided with the programs is:
- The Family File Group - which includes the .NAM, .ADR, .OTH (and .NDX) files
- The Work File Group - which includes the ANCESTOR.WRK, DESCNDNT.WRK, RELATIVE.WRK, SELECT.WRK, REFERENC.REF, and NODEWORK.WRK files
- The Report File Group - which includes the TinyTafel files and files to which reports are "printed"
- The Transfer File Group - which includes the GEDCOM and MailMerge files
The steps for installing the program would be:
- \FAMILY......................for the programs and support files
- \FAMILY\DATA.............for your family data files
- \FAMILY\WORKFILE......for your workfiles
- \FAMILY\REPORT..........for your report files
- \FAMILY\TRANSFER......for the transfer files
- \FAMILY\GENESIS.........if you install the GENESIS Sample File
- \FAMILY\ROYAL...........if you install the ROYAL Sample File
- Create a \FAMILY directory on your hard drive for the software; If you already have a \FAMILY directory in which a previous version of FHS has been installed, you may install these programs in the same directory without losing the ability to run the former programs nor will your existing family files be affected by the installation of these programs.
- Create the other sub-directories of the \FAMILY directory as mentioned above
- If you have used FHS previously and have family files in the \FAMILY directory, copy the (.NAM, .ADR and .OTH datasets to the \FAMILY\DATA directory)
- Copy the 97FHSPGM.ZIP file to the \FAMILY directory
- Use PKUNZIP or similar utility to expand the 97FHSPGM.ZIP file into the \FAMILY directory (the .ZIP file may no longer needed after this)
- Start a FHS session by executing the program: FHSINIT.EXE
- Use Main Menu option F3-A to examine the file name table, making any changes you find appropriate. (The entry for a family file in the DATA directory assumes that the datasets have the default prefix of "FAMILY". If you have used a different prefix, you will want to change that entry. If you are working on multiple family files, you will want to create additional setup entries for the others.)
- If this is your first time using the software, you will have to INITialize the family file before you can enter any information into it. Select Main Menu option F1. You will see the message:
Unable to Open File ..... Press the ESCape key to clear the message and then press the F3 (INIT) key to initialize the family file. You will be prompted to enter the type Address records (Short or Long) that you want to use, after which the file will be created and the active viewing area will be moved to the upper left corner of the screen. Press the F2 key to enter information for the first Name record.- If you are a previous user of FHS, you may want to remove the old program files from your FAMILY directory after you are satisfied that the new update is a satisfactory replacement. The files that you will want to remove are ones of the form:
- FAM*.EXE (most of the program files)
- PAFGEDCM.EXE (the GEDCOM export/import program)
- FAM*.OPT (option files for the report programs)
- BRUN30.EXE (the QuickBasic runtime library)
- FAMILY.DAT (the configuration file...screen colors, file names, printer setups, etc.)
